Work Placement Schedule


At Zoom In we offer about 25 work placement opportunities per year. Work Placements come from local schools and organisations, including special needs schools and organisations providing places for young people not in mainstream education.


This is an example of a typical week for one of our work placements:

Office Duties include:

  • preparing materials for courses
  • data entry on the computer
  • answering telephones
  • mail outs
  • taking post to the Post Office
  • going to the bank

Setting up darkroom includes:

  • mixing chemicals
  • setting up enlargers and extractor fans
  • general cleaning

Monday

10:30am - 12:30pm
  • Introduction and background to Zoom In
  • Health and Saftey Induction
  • Show day to day running of office and darkroom
  • Office work as it arises e.g. Typing up documents, shredding
12:30pm - 1:30pm
  • Lunch
1:30pm - 4:30pm
  • Learning about pinhole cameras, using them to take pictures
  • Learning about chemicals for developing prints
  • Setting up darkroom for the day
  • Process photographs from pinhole camera
  • Printing contact prints
  • Scanning photos and editing on Photoshop
  • Going to post office to deliver parcels etc

Tuesday

10:30am - 12:30pm
  • Office duties as they arise
12:30pm - 1:30pm
  • Lunch
1:30pm - 4:30pm
  • Introduction to manual film SLR with a Volunteer
  • Learn different techniques and skills on taking photos on SLR
  • Process film and develop photographs
  • Printing contact prints

Wednesday

10:30am - 12:30pm
  • Office duties as they arise
12:30pm - 1:30pm
  • Lunch
1:30pm - 4:30pm
  • Set up own folder on Zoom in Flickr account
  • Scan and resize uploaded pinhole prints on computer
  • Upload pinhole prints on Flickr
  • Set up darkroom for the day

Thursday

10:30am - 12:30pm
  • Office duties as they arise
  • Take recycling out
12:30pm - 1:30pm
  • Lunch
1:30pm - 4:30pm
  • Learn how to make an enlargement with a volunteer
  • Toning developed prints sepia, cyan etc.
  • Learn about adjusting filter, aperture, focus, height and using contrast control techniques on enlargers

Friday

10:30am - 12:30pm
  • Office duties as they arise
  • Set up darkroom
  • Learning about using layers and other retouching skills in Photoshop with a volunteer
12:30pm - 1:30pm
  • Lunch
1:30pm - 4:30pm
  • Scan negatives
  • Edit work
  • Upload to online gallery
