Franek
I joined Zoom In in 2002 to gain hands-on experience in working for an independent art organization, learn more about photography, meet people sharing the same passion and have access to the facilities. As a volunteer, I have been involved with several tasks, depending on what needs doing, be it darkroom and office duties or taking photographs for the Zoom In archives. I’ve also assisted on various workshops such as in primary schools in Balham and Streatham and Lambeth Summer Project: a scheme organised and funded by the Metropolitan Police for young people at risk of offending. Four one-day workshops on the theme of personal identity and respect. I have documented the Vegetable Animal Workshop: Brockwell Park, Brixton, July 2004. A great day out in a healthy environment with a positive vibes in the air. Hundreds of living creatures brought to life by the workshop participants, photographed by me and then released in Brockwell Park to live in peace and freedom. I also worked with some young people during their work experience at Zoom In, showing them the basics and what to do to take fantastic pictures. Getting in touch with Zoom In has significantly helped me to carry on developing as a photographer. Access to a darkroom and professional equipment is very important for every photographer, all of which is available to me at Zoom In. What’s more, while volunteering I was lucky enough to meet people who later gave me commissions. The best example is my ongoing work for Michelle Abbey, from the London Philharmonic Orchestra . Every year Zoom In kicks off with a members’ exhibition. In January 2004, as a volunteer, I was invited to take part in Memorabilia, a group exhibition, which received big public interest. I presented two of my photographs from the series Bethnal Green Portraits. This series later evolved into the ongoing project Would you rather be somewhere else? in which I want to explore the origins of London’s inhabitants as well as their private dreamlands.
