Shelley Calhoun
Fairy
Tales
Zoom
In Photography continues its exhibition programme for 2003 with ‘Fairy
Tales’ by Shelley Calhoun, photographs that draw inspiration from,
and reinterpret, fairy tales like Cinderella and Little Red Riding
Hood.
Says Shelley,
“ My images function as loosely-based, modern interpretations of fairy
tales. Like dreams, the narrative is not entirely sequential; and
interpretation is left open to the viewer. Expectations of social compliance
and self-control
are reflected in these stories, including the Victorian lessons
of the dire consequences of pursuing sexual passion.
Although the fairy tales are written for children, I chose to photograph
adults to illustrate what I consider to be mature themes hidden
within the storylines.”
Shelley often uses infra-red and Scala film, creating stark tonal
contrasts which enhance the dreamlike, otherworldly style of the images,
and adding a further dimension to the confrontation between light and darkness,
and the triumph of passion over repression. With their ethereal, atmospheric
settings, the images highlight the issues of control, restraint, sublimation
of desire, and escape that are hidden in these old tales.
‘Fairy
Tales’ runs
from 7th October to 15th November 2003
