John Colley
'321
Spaces'
Zoom In continues its exhibition programme for 2003 with a selection
of images from ‘321 Spaces,’ by John Colley. Each photograph
in this enormous project reflects the feel of the area around one
of the three hundred and twenty-one London Transport underground and mainline
stations.
Says John,
"London is possibly the most photographed city in the world. But many
images of London are polished and manipulated to the point where
they become generic and empty, reflecting ‘London’ the brand, rather
than any real sense of place. My goal is to record places in a more personal
way. Every urban space has a value, an identity; in each photograph,
I try to portray that identity, and reflect the feeling I experienced
at the moment I took the photograph."
The project brings together elements of photojournalism, landscape,
and fine art photography. The images highlight the visual contradictions
of the urban landscape; ‘man-made’ imitates ‘natural’,
new things appear old, the permanent sits alongside the temporary,
the public alongside the private. A cityscape is multi-layered, and not
everything
is what it appears to be!
'321 Spaces' runs from 26th August to 7th October 2003.
