Zoom In continues this year's programme with an exhibition of pinhole photographs Bus Phenomenology by Alia Zapparova
Alia is a Russian photographer based in London and currently volunteers at Zoom In. Her work developed from her study of philosophy and seeks to make visible what we are not aware of in our vision. She is interested in the ways what is usually unseen shapes everyday life, and uses photography as a form of thinking about the spaces of the city.
The photographs on show were taken with a pinhole camera while traveling on London buses. They use this ordinary experience of giving up control of space and time to explore how urban space and time configure and create themselves without our intention, and reveal themselves in ways we do not expect.
The bus became the photographic apparatus as its window served as a frame and the camera shutter was open for the few seconds that the bus stopped at a bus stop or a traffic light. Uncertainty and chance are put to work, creating an unknown photograph of the unknown city.
You can find out more about Alia Zapparova on her website. Her work will be for sale.
This event is FREE, though we will welcome donations on the day towards our Community and Outreach Education Programme.
Opening times are 10.30am - 5.00pm.
