of the course
Aim of the course
Module 105 Film Processing
Materials
needed:
One roll of black and white 35mm film either Ilford HP5 400 ISO
shot but still in it’s canister unprocessed. If you have
processed film before please shoot your film rated at 1600 ISO.
If you have processed your own film before you will need to bring
one roll of Ilford HP5 400 ISO shot with your film rated at 1600
(if you help setting your cameras ISO manually please contact
us). Do not process the film.
Objectives of Module: In this module you will learn how to process a 35mm black and white film competently and understand how to recognise different exposure and development combinations. If you have processed your own negatives before then you will learn push processing techniques. You will be able to recognise a good quality negative and ascertain how the final print will be affected. Practical Exercise Process one roll of black and white film. Back to Top Module 205 Photographic Paper
Materials
needed: A set of good quality black and white negatives and one
(25 sheet) packet of 10” x 8” fibre-based, variable
contrast, black and white photographic
paper, (finish of your choice although glossy finishes are easier
to work with for beginners).
Objectives of Module: In this module you will examine different types of photographic papers and learn how to print using fibre-based paper, you will also recap on printing skills, experimenting with advanced printing techniques using variable contrast paper. Practical Exercise Printing using fibre based paper Back to Top Module 206 Image Control During Development
Materials needed: A set of good quality black and white negatives
and one (25 sheet) packet of 10” x 8” fibre-based
or resin-coated, variable contrast, black and white
photographic paper, (finish of your choice although glossy finishes
are easier to work with for beginners).
Objectives of Module: You will experiment with different darkroom techniques and alternative image-making processes. Altering prints during development teaches you how to "solarise" prints with the Sabbatier technique. Altering prints during exposure will encourage you to try different techniques such as using more than one film when printing, photograms and paper distortion. Practical Exercise Manipulating images in the darkroom Alternative image-making processes Back to Top Module 207 Image Preservation
Materials
needed: A set of good quality black and white negatives and one
(25 sheet) packet of 10” x 8” fibre-based or resin-coated,
variable contrast, black and white photographic paper, (finish
of your choice although glossy finishes are easier to work with
for beginners).
Objectives of Module: In this module you will look at after-treatment of prints, including preparing prints for archiving, changing tonal qualities through colour toning techniques and correcting flaws in prints by retouching. Students will assess their own understanding of each process and plan a further course of action or study to improve on the skills learnt. Practical Exercise Toning prints and tinting Retouching Back to Top Maedhbhina McCombe Course Leader Please read our terms
