Film Processing

There's much more to processing your films into negatives than simply dropping them in chemicals! Learn the techniques needed to start manipulating your images straight from the camera.

“A very easy to understand practical workshop. There is so much more to this simple process than I realised. Thanks!”
Ellie, 2004

film processing workshopsDuring this darkroom lesson you will learn how to process negatives. You will investigate how to creatively manipulate them using push or pull processing techniques, discovering what can be achieved with contrast and explore the subtle arts of chemicals and dilutions to alter the look of your final printed photographs. You will learn how to use the charts and instructions on film packaging to achieve the result you want.

Please see the Film Processing Course Modules for more details.

Course Overview:

Who is the Film Processing course aimed at?
This introduction to Film Processing is aimed at both beginners and those wishing to refresh previous photography skills.

If you have attended a basic darkroom printing course and feel confident printing your own photographs you may want to consider taking our Darkroom Techniques course, which will also introduce you to film processing techniques.

Progression Routes
If you have never printed your own prints this course leads into our Darkroom Introduction or Darkroom Basics. If you have printed before this course will lead onto the Darkroom Techniques.

Film Processing is also part of our introduction to photography courses enabling you to go on to learn how to make the most out of your photographs by learning to do your own printing on our Darkroom Introduction or Darkroom Basics. Please see our Photography Course planner for more details.

When do we hold Film Processing classes?
Film Processing is generally an evening course but may be taken as a weekend workshop. Please see our Photography Course Schedule for more details.
