This
jargon-free camera skills course will enable you to fully understand
your 35mm film or digital SLR camera, and learn how to use photographic
techniques creatively. We will demystify light meters and exposure
readings, aperture and shutter speed controls, depth of field, film
and ISO rating, and loading and unloading of film. You will cover
all the basics of manual camera control and you will learn how to
use these techniques to your advantage. In addition we will explore
the rules and theories of composition, and you will undertake practical
exercises so you can experiment with your new skills in a supportive
environment.
Please see the Camera
Basics Course Modules for more detail on what you will study on
this course.

Course Overview:
Who is the Camera Basics course
aimed at?
Camera Basics is a beginners guide to photography and is ideal for
both beginners and those wishing to refresh their previous camera
knowledge, whether you have a film or digital SLR camera.
You may also be interested in some of our other camera classes such
as the Camera Introduction class
or Basic Photography, which are
also introductory courses in camera skills for total beginners. You
may also want to consider a longer course containing camera and darkroom
lessons such as our Creative
Photography course.
Progression Routes
Camera Basics is also part of our Guide to photography
courses. You may also wish to go on to learn how to make the most
out of your photographs by learning to do your own printing on our
Darkroom Introduction or
Darkroom Basics. Please see our
Photography Course planner
for more details.
Camera Basics prepares students for independent camera and darkroom
use, providing the basic camera skills necessary to progress to our
Developing Photography skills
Level 2 camera lessons such as Travel
Photography or Camera
Techniques.
Although this basic course in cameras covers some of the same elements
as the Creative Photography course, many students attend this course
as a taster before moving on to study photography intensely on the
longer Creative
Photography course.
Buying a camera?
If you are thinking about buying a camera but would like to attend
the course first to get an idea of what camera to buy we offer students
use of our cameras for the duration of the course. However if you
are going to use one of our cameras it is necessary
to join as a Zoom In member and provide a small fee and cash deposit
in case of loss or breakage.
When do we hold photography
classes?
Camera Basics is generally a weekend workshop but
may be taken as a evening course. Please see our Photography
Course Schedule for more details.
