Course Modules

Duration of the course
This course is made up of two modules either taken as two weekday evenings or two weekend days. These modules comprise the following:

Aim of the course
By the end of the course you will be able set up portrait shots both on location and in the studio. You will be able to use photographic techniques and compositional aids to make the most out of your subjects. You will be able to photograph formal and informal portraits and understand what film choices to make given specific lighting conditions.

Materials Needed for the course
Students will need:
A 35mm SLR camera (cameras can be borrowed from Zoom In for an additional fee)
Two to three rolls of film (including processing)

Module 312

Portraiture - 1 Location Portraiture

  • Introduction to location portraiture
  • Formal and informal portraits
  • Equipment, film and composition
  • Available light portraiture

Materials needed: A 35mm SLR camera (cameras can be borrowed from Zoom In for an additional fee) or digital SLR camera or medium format camera. A tripod is desirable but not essential. One roll of film (including processing)

Objectives of Module: You will learn the basics of portrait photography covering formal and informal portraits. You will look at equipment, film and composition. You will examine the work of other photographers through slides and discussion. You will understand how to effectively use available light to create location portraits.

Module 313

Portraiture - 2 Studio Portraiture

  • Studio portraiture
  • Studio lights and medium format cameras
  • Photographing for mood and emotion
  • Assessment and evaluation

Materials needed: A 35mm SLR camera (cameras can be borrowed from Zoom In for an additional fee) or digital SLR camera or medium format camera. A tripod is desirable but not essential. One roll of film (including processing)



Objectives of Module: You will learn the basics of studio portraiture using studio lights and both your own 35mm camera and also a medium format camera, making the most out of Polaroid’s and different film backs. For in depth teaching on this equipment please see both our studio lighting course and medium format cameras, which are aimed to work alongside each other and this one. You will learn the very basics of studio lighting to capture and create a variety of portraits representing different moods and feelings. You will evaluate work completed during previous session and receive guidance and action points for further study and development.
