Pinhole Photography
Course Modules

Duration of the course
Pinhole Cameras is a half day workshop usually taken either as an evening or weekend day. The workshop is made of one module which comprises the following:

Aim of the course
By the end of the course you will be able to use a 35mm SLR camera competently and understand how to use photographic techniques to achieve creative affects. You will be able to process a black and white film, print photographic prints from a negative and be able to use the darkroom by yourself.

Materials Needed for the course
Students will need:
A 35mm SLR camera
A light tight box, preferably with the inside painted black. Cardboard boxes such as a cornflakes box let in too much light. You need to choose something more like the kind of box mobile phones come in as they have thicker card. Better still a small biscuit or chocolate tin -'Roses' do an oval shaped one, which makes an excellent camera (and you get to eat the chocolates as well!)

Black and white photographic paper.
Do not open the packet of paper until inside the darkroom or it will be ruined!

Module 301

Image Formation - Pinhole Photography

  • 35mm cameras and pinhole cameras
  • Making a pinhole camera
  • How to calculate exposures
  • Printing pinhole pictures
Materials needed: A light tight box and black and white photographic paper and a 35mm SLR camera.

Objectives of Module: In this module you will learn how to construct a simple camera. You will follow basic technical instruction (delivered in a deliberately non-jargon style) to understand the physics of camera construction. This process is invaluable in understanding and demystifying the mechanics of your own camera, making all the controls, numbers and measurements clear and logical, whilst also being great fun to do! You will evaluate your own cameras construction, whilst building your pinhole camera. You will make exposures and contact positive prints from paper negatives.
