Landscape Photography
Course Modules

Landscape Photography is a short course which looks at issues around working on location taking landscape and environmental still life pictures. Equipment concerns together with weather and sourcing locations will be discussed. There is an initial session at Zoom In followed by a full day at a location within 25 miles of London in the Surrey Hills, and a final session to present the work.

Duration of the course
The course will consist two evening (3 hour) sessions followed by a full day on location (6 hours) and a final evaluation session.

Aim of the course
By the end of the course, you will be able to work confidently on location taking landscape and location still life images.


Materials Needed for the course
Students will need:
A 35mm SLR camera (cameras can be borrowed from Zoom In for an additional fee) or digital SLR camera or medium format camera. Suitable film based on results of session 2. A tripod is desirable but not essential.

Module 314

Landscape Photography - 1 Introduction to landscape photography

  • Suitable cameras for landscape photography
  • Exposure issues on location
  • Map reading and weather checking

Materials needed: A 35mm SLR camera (cameras can be borrowed from Zoom In for an additional fee) or digital SLR camera or medium format camera. A tripod is desirable but not essential.

Objectives of Module: You will look at the different types and formats of cameras suitable for landscape photography. There will be a discussion of specific exposure issues relating to working on location. You will also look at how to read maps and source suitable locations.

Module 315

Landscape Photography - 2 Film and equipment for landscape

  • Films for Landscape work
  • Photographic equipment
  • Other accessories

Materials needed: A 35mm SLR camera (cameras can be borrowed from Zoom In for an additional fee) or digital SLR camera or medium format camera. A tripod is desirable but not essential.

Objectives of Module: You will learn how to select the most appropriate film to use for the location shoot. You will learn what the differences between films for landscape work (black & white or colour) are. You will look at other equipment both photographic and non-photographic that are valuable for location work.

Module 316

Landscape Photography - 3 Practical landscape location shoot

  • Shooting Landscapes

Materials needed: A 35mm SLR camera (cameras can be borrowed from Zoom In for an additional fee) or digital SLR camera or medium format camera. Suitable film based on results of session 2. A tripod is desirable but not essential.

Objectives of Module: You will learn to shoot a series of images on location with direct practical support. Students will meet at a pre-arranged location at a station within 25 miles of London in the Surrey Hills. You will be given hands on tips and tricks to shoot landscape photographs through ongoing supervision and guidance.

Practical Exercise
Shooting at least one roll of film on location

Module 317

Landscape Photography - 4 Presentation of Landscape Photography

  • Presentation of work
  • Evaluation of work

Materials needed: Final prints from assignments shot during the course.

Objectives of Module: You will evaluate and discuss the work produced by yourself and other students on the course. You will present and discuss the work shot on location, this session will take place a couple of weeks after the location shoot. You will be given advice and action for further study of development and ideas.
