Camera Introduction

Camera Introduction is a photography course designed for both beginners, and those who wishing to refresh their previous photographic knowledge, whether you have a film or digital SLR camera. This jargon free and supportive introductory photography course will enable you to understand your 35mm SLR camera, and teach you how to use photographic techniques creatively. We will take the mystery out of manual camera controls through an introduction to cameras exposure readings, aperture and shutter speed controls, depth of field, film and ISO rating, loading and unloading film and composition. By the end of the course you will be able to use a 35mm SLR camera competently and understand how to use photographic techniques to achieve creative effects.


Aim of the course: Camera Introduction

This course is an introduction to photography; by the end of the course you will understand basic elements of camera control and know photographic terms and techniques and you will be able to use them to your advantage. You will gain the confidence and enthusiasm to continue practising with the basic camera skills you have learnt or move on to one of our more in depth courses.

Objectives of the Module
This module will enable you to use a 35mm SLR or rangefinder camera competently. You will understand how to take great photographs instead of hit and miss shots and use the full functionality of your camera instead of always switching the dial to the green square (or auto function). This includes manual exposure reading, knowing what shutter and aperture controls to use for a given photograph, manual focusing and choice of lenses. Students will also understand what film ISO to buy and/or use. You will also learn how to manipulate the camera to produce varied photographic effects.

Practical Exercise
Shoot one roll of film following exercises in handouts.

Progression Routes

This introductory guide to cameras and photography will provide you with the photographic camera skills necessary to progress to our Developing Photography Skills camera lessons such as Camera Techniques or Travel Photography. You may also wish to go on to learn how to make the most out of your photographs by learning to do your own printing on our Darkroom Introduction or Darkroom Basics. Please see our Photography Course planner for more details. Although this introductory course in cameras covers some of the same elements as the Creative Photography many students attend this course as a taster before moving on to study photography intensely on the longer Creative Photography course.
