Course programme
Session
1 – Jan 29th
- Thinking about photography; look at examples and discuss effects of different
angles, lighting, etc. (half an hour)
- Introduction to SLR camera – basic controls. (half an hour)
- Taking pictures (one hour) – In pairs, shoot a roll of colour film,
based on the techniques the tutor has explained. These films will be processed
in time for the next session.
Session 2 – Feb 5th
- Looking at and discussing last week’s shots; learning about different
types of film and their uses. (half an hour)
- Photo collage – using photos from magazines, plus the shots from
last week, create collage images on card. (one hour)
- Themes and styles – Looking at examples of different styles of
photography - fine art, documentary, advertising, etc and discussing what
we like and why. (half an hour)
Session 3 – Feb 12th
- Revise use of SLR camera. Learn more, e.g. controlling depth of field.
(half an hour).
- Decide on themes for exhibition. Plan the shots each person wants to
take, and work out how to achieve the effects required (angle, lighting, time
of day, etc) (45 mins) The theme chosen by the group was ‘Life’s
Better Together’, and the photos planned were to do with home, family,
school and local environment/community.
- Introducing the darkroom – darkroom safety, learning about how
negatives are produced (45 mins)
Each participant will be given a colour disposable camera to take away. They
will be set a project, based on the themes chosen earlier in the session. Everyone
to bring the cameras back next week for processing.
Session 4 – Feb 19th (during half term. 2pm-4pm)
Go out with SLR cameras and B/W film to take daylight shots in the area around
BAC, based on the things we planned last week. (90 mins). Tutor will develop
negs in time for next session.
Session 5 - Feb 26th
- Looking at negatives from last week – learn how to evaluate a negative,
discuss faults that can arise during developing, and how to remedy them.
Discuss pictures taken with disposable cameras 2 weeks ago. (half an hour)
- Producing a contact sheet; learning about faults that can arise in printing,
and how to remedy them. (90 mins).
Session 6 – March 5th
- Looking at contact sheets; learning how to assess them and select which
- Learning about different types of paper – there will be both gloss
and matte finish paper to choose from. (20 mins)
- Each person to select an image from their contact sheet and print it
(one hour)
Sessions 7 and 8 – March 12th and 19th
Further darkroom sessions - participants will select their favourite pictures
and print them. Learning techniques such as burning and dodging, manipulating
contrast, creating double exposures in the enlarger, etc.
Sessions 9 and 10 – March 26th and April 2nd
Working towards exhibition. What work does the group want to show?
These sessions might include more printing; produce some small images that
they can use as postcards; working on a collaborative montage/collage for the
exhibition; discussing framing, captions, titles, etc.
