Session aims and objectives

• To offer skills-based learning in photography.
  
• To enable participants to develop and express their creativity, and explore issues around portraiture and how we are represented.
  
• To produce portraits of themselves and/or each other, using composition and lighting to help them represent themselves and each other in the way they want.
  
• To provide the Refugee Council with photographs that they can display, in order to give the participants a sense of achievement, and to offer them a means of expressing their creative ideas in a public space.
  

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Visually recognise the use of certain key techniques in a photograph (angle, type of lighting, focus, composition, etc) and understand some of the effects that these techniques can produce.
  
• Understand what a portrait is, and understand some of the different approaches a photographer could take to creating a portrait.
  
• Focus an SLR camera and understand the basis of how exposure works.
  
• Take a photograph with an SLR, using the techniques of composition and lighting that they have learned.
